Curtin Department of Petroleum Engineering

Master of Technology (Petroleum Technology)

What is the MTech?

The MTech is a Curtin University Master of Technology (Petroleum Technology) degree for graduate engineers employed in the oil and gas industry.  This degree can be obtained while continuing to work full-time and includes taught materials delivered as short courses by industry training providers.  The MTech is available to pipeline engineers and designers who attend selected Jee courses.  These courses are accredited through the Curtin University-Shell International MTech partnership as they are delivered in-house to Shell employees, and are also available privately and can lead to Masters degree credits.

The program is structured in order to obtain half the credits through assessment of the Jee materials, and half the credits from workplace-based projects. Students who attend selected Jee courses can apply for admission to Curtin University and complete the Jee course assessment to earn Masters credit towards the MTech. Applications for course entry can be submitted to Curtin University throughout the year. Students accepted into the program will enrol for a Master of Technology (Petroleum Technology) degree with Curtin University of Technology.

How does the course accreditation work?

Assessment of selected Jee courses will provide approximately half the credits required to complete the MTech. The remaining credits will be obtained through workplace-based projects monitored by Curtin University. The program is designed to enable individuals working full-time in industry, to enrol part-time in the Master of Technology (Petroleum Technology) and complete course materials over a two-four years. All assessments will be issued and submitted in the online environment using Blackboard, available through the Curtin University Website. Units included in the course structure will be available for enrolment at various times during the year, enabling students to select a study period most convenient to themselves, to complete the required assessments, and earn university credit towards a Master of Technology (Petroleum Technology).

Selected Jee course assessments will be scheduled 1-2 times per year depending on demand. All students must complete 4 projects (100 credits) in order to graduate. It is recommended that students enrol in at least one project per year (25 credits) as well as complete at least one Jee course assessment (25 credits) to enable graduation within four years of enrolment. The table below provides the suggested structure for pipeline, riser and subsea engineers who attend Jee courses.
